The Prompt
I have a base email that I need to adapt for multiple audience segments.
Keep the offer identical but change the emotional framing and messaging angle for each segment.
Base email:
[paste your base email — subject line, preview, and body]
Adapt this email for the following segments:
Segment 1: [name + describe — e.g., "VIP customers who spend $500+/year"]
Angle: [how to frame the message for them — e.g., "loyalty and exclusivity"]
Segment 2: [name + describe]
Angle: [framing]
Segment 3: [name + describe]
Angle: [framing]
For each segment, rewrite:
- Subject line
- Preview text
- Email opener (first 2 sentences)
- One sentence in the body that makes the offer feel relevant to this specific person
- CTA text (if different)
Keep everything else the same as the base email.
How to Use This
This prompt is most powerful when your segments have meaningfully different relationships with your brand — not just demographic differences. "VIP customer" and "first-time buyer" should feel genuinely different emotional frames, not just "respected customer" vs. "excited new customer."
Common segmentation angles that produce strong variation:
- VIP/loyal: Recognition, exclusivity, "you deserve this"
- Lapsed/inactive: Reconnection, "here's what you missed," soft welcome back
- New subscriber: Trust-building, social proof, "thousands of customers like you"
- High-browse/low-purchase: Reduce friction, address hesitation, "what's stopping you"
- Post-purchase: Deepen relationship, cross-sell, "since you loved X, you'll love Y"
- Lifecycle stage: Trial user vs. paid user vs. long-time subscriber
After getting outputs:
- Check that no variation accidentally includes language inappropriate for that segment (e.g., "we've missed you" shouldn't go to someone who just purchased)
- Make sure all variations link to the same offer/landing page unless you're testing landing pages too
Example
Base email (promotional sale):
Subject: Our biggest sale of the year — 30% off everything
Preview: This is the one you've been waiting for.
Body: [sale details]
CTA: Shop Now
Segment 1: VIP customers ($200+/year) Angle: Exclusivity and gratitude → Subject: "You get early access — 30% off starts now" → Opener: "Before we open this to everyone, we wanted you to have first look."
Segment 2: Lapsed buyers (no purchase in 4+ months) Angle: Reconnection and low-pressure → Subject: "A lot has changed — and this might be why you'll love coming back" → Opener: "It's been a while since we talked, but we have a good reason to reach out today."
Segment 3: First-time buyers (1 purchase only) Angle: Trust and relationship-building → Subject: "Your first purchase unlocks: 30% off your next order" → Opener: "You took the leap with us once — we want to make it even easier the second time."
Variations
For subject line-only variation:
Simplify the prompt to just "Rewrite the subject line and preview text for each segment" — faster if the body doesn't need segment-specific changes.
For more segments:
Add up to 6-7 segments per prompt. Beyond that, start a new conversation to maintain quality.
